CMUS postdoctoral fellow Beatriz Medeiros will be part of the academic committee for the 2nd Horror and Metal Congress, organized by Alberto Hurtado University, the UNAM-Tucson Center for Mexican Studies, the Heavy Metal Studies Seminar, Cowboy Media Agency, CIIR, the HR Giger Museum, and the Gabriela Mistral Cultural Center (GAM). Other committee members are Sergio Miranda and Erika Salas from Mexico and Carlos Arenas from Spain.

The topics to be covered at the meeting are as follows:

  • Sounds, imagery, and lyrics of horror in metal.
  • Intersections between metal, literature, and horror cinema.
  • Horror and social critique in heavy metal: monsters and dystopias.
  • Metal representations of the horror of violence against bodily and gender diversity.
  • Folklorism and horror in local narratives of South America.
  • Memory, trauma and horror: Latin American perspectives on metal.

Presentations are limited to 3,000 words (not including notes and bibliography) and can be read in no more than 25 minutes. Presentations can be made in person or remotely, and the accepted languages are Spanish, English, or Portuguese. Proposals will be evaluated on a double-blind basis. For this purpose, the abstract (300 words maximum) and an updated CV must be sent to congresodehorrorymetal@gmail.com by August 20, 2025. Selected proposals will be published on September 8.
