Call for papers: Opus dossier
The journal Opus, in its 32nd volume, is accepting submissions for the dossier “Thinking Ear: Sound, Listening, and Mediations,” edited by Beatriz Medeiros (Postdoctoral Researcher at CMUS/Universidad Mayor, Chile); Luiz Ribeiro Fonseca (Loughborough University London, United Kingdom); and Marcelo Reis Filho (UERJ, Brazil). The deadline for submissions is March 31, 2026, and the acceptance results will be announced on July 10, 2026.
The announcement states the following: “Sound phenomena have sparked renewed interest in academic research over the past few decades. Under various rubrics —such as “sound studies” and “hearing cultures”— researchers and artists have sought to foreground the making of sound and the multiple possible modes of listening as epistemological, aesthetic, and political acts that extend beyond vision, thus contributing to a renewal within the humanities.”.
The following thematic areas are considered for writing the articles:
1. The construction of tradition: sound, popular culture, and heritage;
2. Cultural policies and the institutionalization of sound archives;
3. Violence, war, sonorities, and music;
4. Studio ethnographies and recording and reproduction technologies;
5. Sound cartographies in urban and non-urban spaces;
6. Climate crisis, Capitalocene, sound, and music;
7. Appropriation and meaning of sound and listening on social media platforms
8. Gender and race studies in sound and music.
