CMUS at the XVII SIBE Congress 2023, XII IASPM-Spain Congress and IV ICTM Spain Congress.
“LISTENING TO OUR PRESENT: A CARTOGRAPHY OF MUSICAL CULTURES IN THE 21ST CENTURY” is the name of the conferences, which will take place from November 2nd to 4th in Granada, Spain. The XVII SIBE Congress 2023, XII IASPM-Spain Congress and IV ICTM Spain Congress are intended as a space in which to reflect on the changing present in which we live.
As proposed on the congress website: “The main objective of this meeting is to propose methodological, conceptual, and theoretical-practical tools to examine the present, that is, to pay attention to the sound phenomena that surround us, bring us together, repel us, or challenge us. In short, it means openness to change and a willingness to review possible prejudices and vices inherited over the years in (and by) the discipline.”
This great event will feature six of our researchers: Laura Jordán, Carla Pinochet Cobos, Sebastián Muñoz Tapia, Luis Achondo, Daniel Party, Javier Rodriguez Aedo, and Christian Spencer.
The researchers will form two panels entitled:
Panel 1: “Urbanity and mediation in popular music of contemporary Chile.” This panel offers a general reflection on the state of research on popular music in Chile, integrating intersections with the variables of ethnicity, technology, class, and vocality. The objective is to update the Ibero-American public on the interdisciplinary debate taking place in the country—through recent case studies—and thus contribute to the Europe-Latin America debate on these issues.
And Panel 2: “Humor, identity and tradition: New perspectives on urban folklore.” This first panel offers four approaches to Chilean urban folklore from the last fifty years.
It considers canonical figures of the New Chilean Song as well as emerging practices of the last decade. The objective is to revisit some topics already addressed in local literature on folk music, identity, and tradition, offering a critical look at their recent development.
