CMUS thesis student Juan Almonacid will take his degree exam tomorrow at the University of Chile
Juan Almonacid, one of the CMUS thesis students, will defend his dissertation tomorrow, January 20th, for the title of Professor specializing in General Music Theory at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Chile. His work, entitled “Through the Door: The Impact of the Euro-Western Canon on the Training of Music Theory Students at the University of Chile (2017-2022),” was supervised by Dr. Fernanda Vera, while Laura Jordán, principal investigator of the Center, served as co-advisor.
Regarding his research, Almonacid points out:This work is the result of several years of research, in which I set out to investigate, through interviews and focus groups, the manifestations of the Euro-Western canon and the maintenance of the Conservatory Model in the Music Theory program at the University of Chile between 2017 and 2022. Thanks to the support of my co-advisor Laura Jordán, and the CMUS group, I was able to explore different positions and suggestions from highly prestigious musicologists through thesis student meetings held at the Alberto Hurtado University and the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso.
