Colloquium: Digital Platforms and Labor Dynamics in the Chilean Music Industry
On Monday, April 7, the Colloquium: Digital Platforms and Labor Dynamics in the Chilean Music Industry was held. The study “Singing for the Algorithm: Spotify and its Impact on the Production, Distribution, and Monetization of Music in Chile” was presented, led by Arturo Arriagada, along with co-researchers Ana Clara Martínez, Diego Olivares, and Macarena Lavín, our Communications Head of Communications.
Other CMUS members also spoke at the meeting. The first presentation was given by Laura Jordán, with the talk “Analog Devices in Digital Environments: The Case of the Cassette,” in which she addressed the democratization of this format, including its use during the Chilean dictatorship. She analyzed cases of self-censorship and the sending of tapes to exiles, and then explored the current relevance of the cassette in the underground music scene. Valparaíso.
Next, Daniel Party presented “Gender Gaps in the Billboard Latin Charts (1987–2024),” a comparative analysis of different charts over time, which highlighted the persistent gender gap.
Finally, Sebastián Muñoz presented “Words and Networks: Collaborative Individualization of Urban Music in Chile,” highlighting the collaborative networks inherent to this genre, the weight of class differences, and the search for authenticity in the artistic proposals of its practitioners.
