The new edition of the Bulletin of Hispanic Studies is out. Within the dossier “Legacies of the 1973 Coup in Chile: Music, Identity and Resistance” is the article by CMUS research associate Javier Rodríguez called “Terrains of Politics: Jan Fairley‘s Research and Fieldwork on Chilean Music (England/France, 1977-1987)”.

The article reads as follows: “The Scottish ethnomusicologist, journalist and activist, Jan Fairley, carried out extensive research and field work on the folkloric groups of the Chilean New Song movement, especially Karaxú (exiled in France and linked to the Revolutionary Left Movement, MIR). These investigations generated a vast archive (currently housed in Santiago, Chile), which includes letters, interviews, field recordings, internal documents, and photographs, among other materials. This article attempts to understand Jan Fairley‘s research process. about a particular type of popular music: political folklore. There is to highlight her disciplinary concerns (such as the role of performance and the staging of emotions, and the role of ethnographic work in the production of historical archival documents), and her personal activities as an agent promoting British solidarity with Chile.”
