Laura Jordán at XIV Coloquio Internacional de Musicología Casa de las Américas
Laura Jordán will participate in the Casa de las Américas International Colloquium on Musicology today, March 16, in Havana. The CMUS researcher will present the paper “Cassette Archives: Home Recording and Community in Times of Dictatorship” at the panel “Archives: Research and Socialization Strategies,” which she shares with Luis Mendivil from Peru, and Sergio Marcelo de los Santos and Marita Fornaro Bordolli from Uruguay.
In her presentation, she states: “This paper reflects on the study of cassette collections, based on two cases: the Quilapayún collection held at the UC Arts Archive and the private collection of the Raíces label, both largely produced during the last Chilean military dictatorship. By examining a typology of recordings preserved by the curators of these archives—Eduardo Carrasco and Ramón Andreu, respectively—the paper explores the relationships between the intimate and the public, between the individual and the collective, where informal recording plays a fundamental role. In short: by considering the production of home recordings (copies, compilations, live recordings), it is not only possible, but unavoidable, to think of the cassette as a participatory device that facilitated the exchange and development of community practices that intertwined the political and the affective in a context of exile and cultural resistance.”
