Laura Jordán published an academic article in the journal Historia Social y de las Mentalidades (Social History and Mentalities) of the University of Santiago. In the text entitled “Illapu in Exile and Their Andean (Pop) Trajectories,” the CMUS principal researcher explores the place of “the Andean” in the Chilean group’s music abroad and how its sound is reinvented in the context of international tours.

The article reads: “This article studies part of Illapu’s history in exile, investigating the stylistic transformation and the production of discourses that take shape through the transnational experience. In particular, it questions the strategies Illapu adopts to update the place of “the Andean” in his music, in the search for a proposal of global reach. On the one hand, it addresses the exploration of pop and Afro-Latin sounds, through the incorporation of the electric bass and new rhythms. On the other hand, it examines the production of self-promotion discourses on international tours, observing the relativization of the political component and a reinvigoration of the Andean before diverse audiences, where the reinvention of the local becomes crucial.”

This article is part of the Fondecyt Regular project 1230421 “Cassette cultures: technology, listening and participation” and the Millennium Nucleus in Musical and Sound Cultures (CMUS) NCS 2022_016, funded by the National Agency for Research and Development (ANID).
