Invited by Professor Laura Jord\u00e1n, the renowned British sociologist David Hesmondhalgh (University of Leeds, United Kingdom) will conduct two activities at the Pontifical Catholic University of Valpara\u00edso (PUCV) on November 5 and 6. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"522\" data-end=\"812\">The first will be the <strong data-start=\"541\" data-end=\"556\">conference<\/strong> entitled <em data-start=\"566\" data-end=\"658\">The Global Spread of Music Streaming: Capitalism and Colonialism, Technology and Culture<\/em>, which will take place on Wednesday, November 5 at 6:30 p.m. in the Redes Room of the Sausalito Library (El Bosque 1290, Vi\u00f1a del Mar). <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"814\" data-end=\"1114\">On Thursday, November 6th at 10:00 am, Hesmondhalgh will participate as a commentator in the workshop <strong data-start=\"821\" data-end=\"863\">Materialities, practices and industries of popular music<\/strong>, an event that will bring together researchers from different universities to present their recent projects.<\/p>\n<h4 data-start=\"1121\" data-end=\"1149\"><strong data-start=\"1125\" data-end=\"1149\">About the conference<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-19545 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/cmus.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/2-3-240x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/cmus.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/2-3-240x300.png 240w, https:\/\/cmus.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/2-3-819x1024.png 819w, https:\/\/cmus.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/2-3-768x960.png 768w, https:\/\/cmus.cl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/2-3.png 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1151\" data-end=\"1237\">The conference abstract states the following:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"1151\" data-end=\"1237\">How and in what ways might digital platforms such as Spotify, YouTube, TikTok and Kugou Music be (re)shaping music production, distribution and consumption internationally? Does the global spread of music streaming favour western technologies, business practices and cultural forms at the expense of those associated with the Global South? What might the \u201cplatformisation\u201d of music tell us about the relationships between political-economic power and inequality on the one hand, and cultural change on the other? Might music streaming even be a form of \u201ccultural imperialism\u201d \u201cdigital colonialism\u201d or \u201cplatform imperialism\u201d?
