During the first period of the Center for Musical and Sound Cultures (CMUS), numerous academic publications were produced in indexed journals, and there was participation in various national and international conferences. Here we share the first part of those achievements. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Last December, the first phase of CMUS, which ran from 2022 to 2025 and was funded by the Millennium Initiative of the National Research and Development Agency (ANID), came to a close. The project brought together a network of researchers in converging disciplines (music studies, social anthropology, sociology of culture, and education) with an inter- and transdisciplinary perspective across four regions and seven universities in the country. Through collaborative work, the project focused on the following lines of research: Communities, territories, and participation; Education and heritage; and Economies, industries, and policies of culture. <\/p>\n

The team consisted of 7 principal investigators (Christian Spencer, Carla Pinochet, Andrea Chamorro, Ignacio Soto, Daniela Fugellie, Laura Jord\u00e1n and Daniel Party) who continue to this day; 7 associate investigators (Eileen Karmy, Sebasti\u00e1n Mu\u00f1oz, Javier Rodr\u00edguez, Natalia Bieletto, Javier Silva, Leonardo D\u00edaz Collado and Luis Achondo); plus 2 senior investigators (Ana Mar\u00eda Ochoa and Rodrigo Torres); and 2 postdoctoral investigators (Mart\u00edn Luit from Argentina and Beatriz Medeiros from Brazil).<\/p>\n

Academic Production and Scientific Positioning<\/strong>
\nRegarding publications, CMUS contributed a total of 104 scientific articles. Of these, 81 are open access (77.88%), and 11 articles were published in Q1 ranked journals; 39 articles in journals indexed in ISI\/WOS (37.50%), 19 in SCOPUS (18.27%), 8 in SCIELO (7.69%), 30 books and chapters of scientific books (28.85%), 8 publications in other specialized journals (7.69%). Regarding the distribution of publications according to disciplinary field, 21 were from Ethnomusicology (20.19%), 22 from Musicology (21.15%), 26 from Popular Music Studies (25.00%), 4 from Music Education (3.85%), 11 from Cultural Anthropology (10.58%), 15 from Sociology of Culture (14.42%) and 5 from Sound Studies (4.81%). <\/p>\n

CMUS researchers participated in the publication of eight dossiers between 2023 and 2025, comprising a total of 50 articles. These publications addressed topics such as Indigenous peoples and popular music, urban music, gender and dissidence in music, sound ecologies, instrumental practices in Latin America, and musical commemorations of the 50th anniversary of the coup d’\u00e9tat in Chile.
In addition, team members organized 63 scientific activities, including seminars, workshops, conferences, symposia, and other academic events. Over the course of the three years, the number of activities increased: 12 activities in 2023 (19.05% of the total), 21 activities in 2024 (33.33% of the total), and 30 activities in 2025 (47.62% of the total). <\/p>\n

The research team members gave 172 presentations at conferences, of which 62 were at national conferences (36.05%) and 110 were at international conferences (63.95%). Internationally, the researchers conducted scientific activities in 21 countries across the Americas, Europe, Asia, and Oceania: Argentina, Belgium, Bolivia, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Cuba, Finland, France, Germany, Guatemala, Kyrgyzstan, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Russia, Slovenia, Spain, Serbia, the United States, and Uruguay. <\/p>\n
