Beatriz Medeiros will speak about metal and TikTok at the Brazilian Congress.
On Friday, October 17, CMUS postdoctoral fellow Beatriz Medeiros will present a paper at the Association of Internet Researchers (AoIR) International Conference in Brazil. Her talk, titled “Entering the Metal(tok) Scene: Community, Cultural Identity, and Latin American Creators,” will be part of the “Music Industries” panel.
The abstract reads as follows: “This study investigates how TikTok’s affordances—such as trends, challenges, and algorithmic visibility—mediate traditional metal subcultural dynamics while also enabling localized reinterpretations. Notably, Latin American metal fans engage with humor, national identity, and gender boundaries in ways that both challenge and reinforce existing power structures within the global metal scene.
