In the Place of Others: On Representation in Museums and Ethnography” is the name of the article that Carla Pinochet published in the academic journal Itinerarios.

The deputy director of the Millennium Nucleus writes the following in her abstract: “This article addresses the problem of cultural representation in ethnographic practice and museum work, identifying the converging challenges shared by these adjacent fields. Starting from a minimal definition of the operation of representation (i.e., “to put in the place of the other”), the text explores the ways in which representation creates tensions in ethnographic and museological practice across three dimensions: epistemological, ethical-political, and aesthetic. To this end, it traces a path through key authors and milestones in the history of anthropology and museums, examining how the modern Enlightenment rationality that originally sustained these disciplines has been marked by crises and contradictions. Finally, the article considers strategies developed within these fields to deal with the complexities of representation, with particular attention to Latin American experiences”
