He holds a PhD in Musicology from the University of Valladolid and the Complutense University of Madrid. His research focuses on the study of musical practices in popular and traditional contexts and music education from an intercultural perspective.

He is a member of the Study Group on Music and Dance in Latin America and the Caribbean of the International Council for Traditional Music (ICTM), and is president of the ICTM National Committee in Chile. He is currently a professor in the Department of Humanities and Arts, and is Head of the Pedagogy Program in Secondary Arts Education with Specializations. He also coordinates the research group GIAP10/21 “Music, Culture and Territory: Debates on Musical Research from the Regions”.
